The Simple Life
Submitted by Larry on Tue February 13th, 2007 at 04:32:14 PM EST
A good friend asked me what I wanted in life. Like everyone else, I answered happiness. The problem seems to be that most people have a dream of goal-based happiness that appears to be euphoric, but ephemeral. Whenever I think of happiness, life, and goals, I remind myself of a story I heard many years ago, which puts me into the perspective I would like to be in..

A businessman was on vacation in Mexico, walking by a pier when a small boat with a fisherman docked. Inside the boat were several large fishes. Naturally, the curious businessman made some small talk and asked, "how long did it take you to catch these fishes?" "An hour or two."

The entrepreneur in the businessman pressed on:
"Why don't you stay out longer and catch more fish?"
"It's enough for my family."
"What do you do with the rest of your time?
"Sleep a bit, play with my children, dance with my wife, and at night, drink and play music with my friends."

The businessman offered his help:
"I have an MBA from Harvard, and I can help you. First, you should spend more time fishing, selling the extra fishes for a bigger boat."
"Why would I need a bigger boat?"
"With the bigger boat, you can go out farther fishing and selling the extra fishes for more boats."
"Why would I need more boats?"
"With enough boats, you don't need to sell to a middleman, you can sell it straight to the processor."
"Why would I sell it straight to the processor?"
"You'll have enough money to save up to build your own cannery!"
"Why would I need my own cannery?"
"So you can control your product more efficiently and have enough money to move to New York and create effective branding!"
"Why would I need branding?"
"So you sell your fishes all over the world!"

"But how long would this all take?"
"15-20 years."
"And then what?"
"And then you can take your company public, sell company stocks and become rich!"
"Rich? What about it?"
"You'll be rich enough to retire, move to a small quiet town, sleep a bit, play with your children, dance with your wife, and play music with your friends!"

its such a thing that people have to go out and make more money and dont just sit back and realise that with what they have they are really happy.

i just wish people could see this more often.

that was really touching.

Have ambitions, challenge yourself, but never lose sight of what's really important..
